KUUMBA 2026: Toronto’s Celebration of Black Creativity & Futures

Toronto’s streets, galleries, and performance spaces come alive every February with KUUMBA, the city’s longest-running Black Futures Month festival. Meaning “creativity” in Swahili, KUUMBA is more than just a festival, it’s a platform for celebrating Black voices, stories, and artistry across generations.
What to Expect in 2026
Running February 1–28, 2026 at Harbourfront Centre, KUUMBA 2026 is themed “Sounds of Blackness”. The festival explores the powerful ways Black culture shapes music, performance, visual arts, theatre, and community dialogue. Visitors can expect:
Live Music & Performances: Featuring musicians like Dennis Passley, Larnell Lewis, and Dwight Jones, KUUMBA brings vibrant, contemporary sounds together with traditional influences.
Art Exhibits & Installations: Works by Ghanaian-Canadian artists, such as Ekow Nimako, explore identity, imagination, and heritage.
Spoken Word & Film: Film screenings and spoken word events showcase bold stories from Black women and non-binary creators.
Family & Community Activities : Free, interactive Sundays for families to create, learn, and celebrate together.
Workshops & Theatre: Playwriting, drag performances, and theatre events offer immersive experiences for all audiences.
🎶 Why KUUMBA Matters
For over three decades, KUUMBA has been Toronto’s stage for Black creativity. It honors cultural history while inviting audiences to engage with the future of Black artistic expression. It’s a celebration that blends education, entertainment, and empowerment — all under one festival umbrella.
Whether you’re attending a live performance, exploring an exhibit, or joining a workshop, KUUMBA 2026 is your chance to experience the richness, vibrancy, and creativity of Black culture in Toronto.
