The Final Stretch

The year isn't over. Not even close.

September can create the illusion that the year is almost finished.

The back-to-school rush begins, fall arrives, Thanksgiving is suddenly on the calendar, and before long we're talking about the holidays.

It happens quickly.

There is, however, still a significant stretch of the year ahead.

That makes September a good time to stop thinking about what the year was supposed to look like and start thinking about what you can still make happen.

There Is Still Time

Maybe there was something you wanted to accomplish this year that never quite happened.

A trip you didn't take. A business idea you didn't pursue. A room you never finished. A place you've been meaning to visit. A conversation you've been putting off.

It doesn't automatically become a failure because it didn't happen by August.

Plans change. Priorities shift. Life gets busy.

What matters is deciding whether those things still matter enough to make them happen.

The Advantage of the Final Stretch

There is something different about the final few months of a year.

The pressure of January has disappeared. You know more now than you did at the beginning of the year. You have a better sense of what worked, what didn't and what is actually worth your attention.

That perspective can be useful.

Instead of creating another list of ambitious goals, choose a few things that genuinely deserve to be finished, started or experienced before the year ends.

Don't Wait for January

January gets a lot of credit for being the month of new beginnings.

There is no rule that says you have to wait until then.

September can be just as good a time to make a decision, take the first step or finally act on something you've been thinking about.

There are still birthdays to celebrate, dinners to host, places to explore, opportunities to pursue and memories to make.

The final stretch isn't about rushing to the finish line.

It's about remembering that you still have time to shape how you get there.
