As November approaches, colder temperatures and shorter days make this a good time to prepare your home for the winter season. A few simple tasks can help you stay comfortable, prevent avoidable problems, and keep your home organized.
1. Check Your Windows and Doors
Look for noticeable drafts around windows and exterior doors. Replacing worn weatherstripping or sealing small gaps where appropriate can help reduce heat loss.
2. Replace Your Furnace Filter
Check your heating system's filter and replace it according to the manufacturer's instructions. A clean filter helps maintain airflow and supports efficient operation.
3. Clean Your Gutters
Remove leaves and debris so water can drain properly. Blocked gutters can contribute to water overflowing near the foundation or freezing in colder weather.
4. Prepare Your Outdoor Space
Store patio furniture, garden tools, and other seasonal items. Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses where appropriate to reduce the risk of freezing damage.
5. Test Safety Devices
Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, and replace batteries when needed. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and applicable safety requirements.
6. Create a Cozy Indoor Space
Bring out warm blankets, organize entryway storage, and add comfortable lighting to make your home feel inviting during darker evenings.
You do not need to complete every task in one day. Choose one or two improvements at a time and work through your list at a comfortable pace. Small steps today can help make the colder months more comfortable tomorrow.
